1. Playing To Win Not To Draw
Despite the obvious advantages in a draw with Germany, it is vital that the United States take the game to the Germans. Sitting back and allowing Germany to dictate the flow of the game will result in a loss for the Americans and the potential for a devastating early exit from Brazil. Germany has an abundance of excellent passers who will pick apart the central defenders if given the ability to roam freely through the midfield. With that said, look for Klinsmann to use a formation which will allow the United States to capitalize on the counter attack. Attempting to mimic the German's style is a tactic that I believe Klinsmann has considered. If successfully integrated it would the United States would blaze into the knockout stage with a full head of steam.
DeAndre Yedlin should feature as a sub again |
2. Making Impact Substitutions
For the Americans to win Klinsmann will need to choose his subs very carefully. DeAndre Yedlin was brilliant when used against Portugal, leading me to believe that he will be featured in a similar role against Germany, as he provides much needed speed. There are four particular players that I believe may be called upon, and they each bring specific attributes to the pitch. Depending on the score and flow of the game, Klinsmann should consider utilizing the following subs:
Another ideal sub in a tie game would be Mikkel (Mix) Diskerud. Diskerud is a true impact substitute. He scored as a sub when brought on against Azerbaijan and his strong work ethic spurred the United States on to a win after a slow start. Germany is certainly no Azerbaijan, but Diskerud has shown that when called upon he is a capable and reliable sub for Jurgen Klinsmann.
If the United States is winning, Klinsmann would be wise to insert Chris Wondolowski. Wondolowski is the next choice behind the injured Jozy Altidore, as he can hold up the ball and efficiently bring the midfield into the attack. He was brought on late versus Portugal and did well to secure the ball.
If the Americans are losing, the super-sub of choice should be Aron Johnnasson. Johnnasson is going to be a leading forward for the United States in World Cup 2018. His nose for goal makes him the best choice if the Americans are trailing.
If the game is tied, Brad Davis should be used as sub around the 75th minute. Davis is the one true set piece specialist on this United States side. The lefty has not yet appeared in any matches, but the skill he provides on set pieces, particularly free kicks, is something that could exploit a tired German defense.
My choice for substitutes is based on this line-up...
The USA could also use the line-up used against Portugal |
